This was nothing short of a communist invasion, in his eyes, and the patriots of Green Charter needed to rise up and confront the Red Peril. But the backlash in Green Charter represents something seldom seen since the Red Scare: a quasi-militant, homegrown resistance to the perceived threat of communism at home. But as the war over Gotion began to consume Green Charter, Riebow began to feel that the township board was behaving "too secretly." It's easy to dismiss what's happened in Green Charter as yet another sign of America's descent into dangerous incivility. Asked about Gotion's plans in Green Charter, Panetta replied, "I don't think there's any question that they are going to take advantage of that situation."

Some told BI that they can't find other accommodating jobs and that gig work is a dead end. He said gig driving was one of his only options to supplement his disability benefits. Robert is one of many disabled gig drivers who say they have no other options to make a living. "Disabled gig workers can be forced to rely on gig work for income because of issues with exclusion and discrimination in traditional workplaces," Shruti Sannon, a technology-policy program director at the ACLU who authored a paper on disabled gig workers, said. Opinion | The What-Ifs of Trump’s New Hampshire Win
  + stars: | 2024-01-24 | by ( Ross Douthat | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Like his victory in Iowa last week, Donald Trump’s defeat of Nikki Haley in New Hampshire was substantial enough to remove any real doubt about the outcome of the primary campaign yet also somewhat underwhelming as a statement of voter enthusiasm for a former president and de facto incumbent candidate. It proved that Trump is basically unbeatable in this timeline while hinting that it could have been otherwise, that we were only a few what-ifs away from a more competitive campaign. You can see some of those what-ifs hovering around an interesting Politico profile of a New Hampshire Republican voter who considered Haley, even donated to her, before returning to Trump when the primary arrived. When Kruse first meets him, Johnson says that Trump feels to him like a “rebel without a cause” and that he’s looking for a candidate who can help reunite the country — which draws him to Haley as her star rises in New Hampshire. Flash forward to the days just before the election, though, and Johnson has swung back to Trump, even though — or because — the former president is a “wrecking ball” who Johnson thinks will “break the system.”

A startup that offers personalized health screenings for individuals and employees has just raised $1.2 million in fresh funds. Berlin-based HealthCaters, which was founded three years ago, has developed a home-testing kit so that users can screen themselves for preventable diseases. The startup's app, which is also powered by AI, then suggests personalized health guidelines based on the results of these screenings. Based on these results, medical coaches at the startup create an individual health plan for patients. With the fresh funding, HealthCaters will double down on its business-to-business offerings, and eye a launch in the UK market.

Aug 2 (Reuters) - An electric guitar once owned by Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain is among the top lots to be sold at Kruse GWS Auction later this month, and could fetch upward of $200,000. "I think we are going to see some great activity on that guitar," said lead auctioneer, Brigitte Kruse. "I would expect this one to probably fall in the couple of hundred thousand range conservatively," Kruse said. The “Artifacts of Hollywood & Music” online sale, on August 26, will feature over 350 lots from singers, actors and movie costumes. The organization will be renamed Club CMO and will merge with the marketing group Brand Innovators. Salesforce quietly discontinued the CMO Club in April, a marketing organization it acquired in 2020. Now, CMO Club, which has about 900 top marketers as members, will change its name to Club CMO because Salesforce still has rights to the original name, and merge with a similar industry group called Brand Innovators. "The CMO Club was where we could have those private and personal conversations without the press and sales people," said Club CMO board member Carol Kruse. In her decades-long career as a marketer, she's used advice from her peers at Club CMO roughly 50 times, she estimated.

And I challenge you to find me one voter, just one, whose pro or con decision about Trump hinged on his third wife. I’d forgotten all about her until she came up the other day in a Daily Beast headline that called Casey DeSantis “the Walmart Melania.” Better than “the Bergdorf Melania,” which would be redundant. But while we tend to exaggerate the importance of what a spouse does in public, we sometimes shortchange the relevance of what a spouse does in private. That’s where and how Casey DeSantis probably matters most. The political spouse I observed most closely, Laura Bush, was much more consequential behind the scenes than in front of the cameras.

The Biden Administration recently announced nearly half a billion dollars from both the Inflation Reduction and Infrastructure laws would go toward clean energy projects at former coal mines. Abandoned coal mines generally fill with water when the mining has ceased. Geothermal energy is not new, but taking it from abandoned coal mines is not yet common, especially in the United States. Geothermal energy from coal mines can be used not only to heat homes and buildings, but also to cool them. Kruse-Daniels said that while it is a relatively inexpensive form of clean energy, the location and legacy may be liabilities.
Things have been difficult for her family, she says, but one thing she isn’t worried about: a midlife crisis, looming just over the horizon. One of our questions was about whether they had experienced a midlife crisis and how they would define the term. Many people said they felt they couldn’t be having a midlife crisis, because there was no bourgeois numbness to rebel against. “Who has midlife crisis money?”The traditional midlife crisis, as presented in popular culture, at least, unfolds amid suburban ennui. We just increase our Lexapro.”Was the midlife crisis ever even real?

U.S. prosecutors are dropping felony fraud charges they brought against a former chief executive of ice cream maker Blue Bell Creameries LP in the wake of a 2015 listeria outbreak that led to three deaths. As part of a settlement reached Wednesday, Paul Kruse , Blue Bell’s CEO from 2004 until 2017, will plead guilty to a misdemeanor charge over food safety violations. He will pay a $100,000 fine and avoid jail time, according to a plea agreement filed in federal court in Austin, Texas.
Jan 26 (Reuters) - Personal items once owned by Elvis Presley are expected to fetch big bucks when they come up for auction this week. The nearly 40 lots from Presley include a jacket designed by the man behind his famous jumpsuit and cape, a well-loved briefcase, and an address book filled with his handwriting, expected to bring in over $10,000. The address book featured "the people that he really was closest with and connected the most with," said Kruse GWS auctions founder and lead auctioneer Brigitte Kruse. "We actually have some of his personal notes (in the book), which we're going to leave as a surprise for the winning bidder." Also included in the "Artifacts of Hollywood & Music" sale on Jan. 28 are items from Marilyn Monroe and Liza Minnelli - plus Rock Hudson's dog's Christmas stocking.

While the laws around workforce reductions vary by location and employer size, there are steps anyone can take to help cope with being let go. Negotiate your severance offerBill Varie | The Image Bank | Getty ImagesEmployers are not required by federal law to offer severance, but if they do, those contracts can often be negotiated. Companies offer severance to keep good will with former employees, keep workers from disclosing company secrets and to avoid potential lawsuits. Severance agreements typically come with a waiver of liability that has to be signed before any payment is made. While it varies based on the age of the worker and state laws, employees typically are given a few weeks before they have to sign.
That's when I started reporting on them, and like any good nerd I was compelled by what scientists could learn with these "brain computer interfaces." The race for implantable brain chips has been a long, deliberate marathon. Graham Felstead, who has severe paralysis, was the first person to have a BCI inserted via the blood vessels. Brain chips will enable them to perform simple actions on their own and reduce the need for round-the-clock care. "When we started in 2015 and I was pitching venture capitalists on brain computer interfaces, no one knew what a brain computer interface was," says Matt Angle, the CEO of Paradromics.
